Removing adware can be a pretty big pain in the butt. By following these four easy steps, you can simplify the process quite a bit and make it manageable.
1. First, you'll need to identify which type of adware you have on your computer. The best way to do this is with a program called HijackThis. Download the program and use it to scan your computer.
2. Next, take the list that HijackThis gives you and search on Google for each item to identify it. Almost all of the items on that list will be normal system processes, so you can't run in deleting them all with reckless abandon.
3. When you've found something that isn't supposed to be there, that's your adware. Write down the location on your system where the file is installed, then restart your computer (make sure to bookmark this article!), making sure to press F8 while it's booting to bring up the boot options menu. Boot into safe mode to prevent the adware from running, and then delete it entirely from your system.
4. You will be able to rerun HijackThis from within safe mode. Run it and use it to remove the line item corresponding to the malware you just deleted, and you should have successfully removed the malicious software from your system.
If it ends up coming back (and in rare cases they do) you may have to search on Google for specific instructions on removing that particular type of adware from your computer. Note that some adware is specifically designed to be hard to remove, so it may take some time. Be patient!
