Your RAM is a vital part of your computer that allows you to load and run programs into a temporary space for efficiency and speed. However the more programs and applications you add ,the more of your limited RAM space will be in use, like your arteries clogging with fat. However, you can optimize RAM to be more efficient which allows your PC to smoothly run movies, games and other applications. Here are six simple ways to optimize RAM use without hardware upgrades.
1. Control Your TSR Programs.
To optimize RAM efficiently, you need to eliminate all the programs that are automatically loaded into your temporary RAM space. These programs are known as TSR programs, terminate and stay resident program. In other words these programs load and stay in your RAM restricting RAM use by other applications. Optimize RAM by stopping these programs from automatically starting. Here is how: Click Start > Programs > Startup > Right Click and remove the unwanted Startup program file. .Or type MSconfig in the RUN command line and remove the program. Visit the Manage Your Startup page for a list of programs that are unnecessary for startup.
2. Close All Background Applications
Yes, any open windows or programs will drain your RAM capacity. A very simple way to optimize RAM for larger programs such as a game or movie is to turn off all current programs. To do this simply press Crtl-Alt-Delete at the same time to pull up the task manager. Then right click the program to terminate it.
3. Remove Fancy Settings
Windows has great features such as fading windows, translucency and shiny textures. However, these features do little to improve your computer performance. In addition, all these features are loaded into your RAM. You can optimize RAM usage by setting Windows to use as low amount as RAM as possible for visual features. Here's how: Click Start > Control Panel > System > find the Advanced tab and Click. > Under Performance, Click Settings > Under Visuals Effects, you may choose from a list of options such as Adjust for best performance or custom. If you choose adjust for best performance all the features will be unchecked.
4. Turn Off Your Anti-virus
Unless you are constantly visiting websites that are hazardous your computer's health, you don't need your anti-virus program running 24/7. Most of the protective elements of anti-virus are loaded into RAM and stay there. This can hog a lot of your useful resources and slow your PC down considerably. You can optimize RAM easily but just shutting off your anti-virus and running when you need to perform a scan.
5. Limit Pesky Services
Many services are constantly searching for updates and providing your PC with information. However, updating something as simple as a Google applications can eat up a ton of RAM. Discover what services are running in the background and their meaning by typing in this line in the run command: "services.msc". Enter this command the same way you did for msconfig. This will bring up the services window. If you drag the mouse to one of the services, it will give you a detailed explanation of the service in question. By right clicking the individual service you can stop the service immediately.
6. Update your Memory drivers
Your operating system must have up to date software drivers to communicate correctly with your hardware. That goes for your RAM also. You need to update your drivers to optimize RAM properly. If the drivers are not functioning chances are you memory is not functioning. Type devmgmt.msc into the run command line. This will bring up your device manager. Expand the Memory section by clicking the + symbol. Right click your memory and choose update driver.
All in all, these tips should help to optimize RAM usage on your PC. Yes, an upgrade will always be effective. However, before you splurge on new RAM sticks, make sure your computer is capable of handling a memory upgrade. If you think your RAM is faulty or you've received an error message.
